In March 2018, Kanye West's YEEZY label released the first iteration of its in-house slides, or sandals. They were plain, slightly oversized, built for comfort, and produced mostly in earthy tones. Later, in April 2018, Kanye released what he called a rough draft of a slide prototype. The sandal was blue and looked like it had been 3D printed, with serrated soles intended for grip and comfort. In August 2018, Kanye wore a Louis Vuitton suit designed by Virgil Abloh with a pair of slides that were a few sizes too small for 2 Chainz's wedding. People reacted with a variety of opinions about the ill-fitting slides. Kanye explained that the Japanese wear them that way. Even designer Virgil Abloh weighed in on the public debate. Since they went into production, they have only increased in popularity and in 2023 were one of the fastest-selling newly designed sandals worldwide.
